Introduction

I first became interested in home computer security not long after I started working in information security. I was asked to write a guide to the ideas and technologies of information security for an IT literate audience who, like me, were new to security. So I had to think carefully about how I wanted to communicate it and how, if it were me reading the guide, I could get the most out of it. It became increasingly clear that all IT users had to understand security, not only because our workplaces needed to be secure, but so did our homes. Yet there was little information for the home user. There was a clear need to provide a guide to information security for home users. This was some years ago. Since then it seems that everything has changed but nothing has changed. Technology has changed radically, software has evolved at pace, and our use and dependence on the internet has become even more intense. But the danger from security threats and vulnerabilities has not gone away and the need to protect ourselves remains. The need for home users to look after security has, if anything, increased.

Unfortunately, information security is too often thought of as a technical subject. The solution to security problems is seen as software products and technologies. This puts many novices and home users off. In fact, security is also about people and processes. It requires an underlying appreciation of risk. Without understanding of these factors, even security products may not provide the security you need.

My aim for this blog, and my book, is to help those who want to understand what security is really about, and enable them to use that understanding to take sensible measures to reduce their risk. What I really want to get across is a 'philosophy' of security. We need to understand the risks, the threats, and the vulnerabilities. As IT changes, and information security evolves, you can be equipped to make the right decisions and can confidently protect yourself, your information and your family.
